Construction Could Affect Hiking Plans

Las Vegas is home to the neon lights and the glitz of the strip. But nearly 30 miles west of that, you’ll find one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the state: Red Rock Canyon.

It attracts millions of visitors, looking to hike, climb, or bike. Some just want the mountains as a backdrop in their pictures.

Last year, the park had record numbers. The big crowds caused temporary closures because it was full.

Now, visitors have to navigate through construction on the 13-mile scenic drive.

Since February, crews have been working on improvements to the road and some parking lots. The Bureau of Land Management announces it’s about halfway done.

The construction won’t be too much of a hassle for drivers. But it could affect plans for hikers, climbers, and bikers.

The first trailhead of the scenic loop, Calico 1, is still closed because of work on the parking lot. It will nearly quadruple the amount of spaces. Park officials expect it to open this Friday (May 5th).

Renovations to the parking lots of Sandstone Quarry and Pine Creek could add extra miles to your hike.

Both lots will temporarily close next week, to add more parking spots at each location.

Those planning to hike Sandstone Quarry can use Calico 1 or 2 parking lots (once Calico 1 reopens May 5th). Those at Pine Creek can use the Oak Creek parking lot. But, it will be quite a walk to get to either of these trailheads. Officials say both lots should reopen by the end of August.

Bikers will also want to be cautious using the scenic loop. Crews are repaving the road, one mile at a time. Some parts may be dirt, so plan ahead.
